Why AI recommends a different business in every Hampton Roads city
Ask an AI assistant to recommend a business in Norfolk, then ask the same question about Virginia Beach. You might expect two versions of the same answer. You would be wrong. In our own checks across Hampton Roads, the AI named a largely different short list of businesses in almost every city — and that changes how a local business should think about being found.
What we tested
Between 29 September and 1 October 2026 we ran our own free AI Visibility Check five times for one kind of business — a media or marketing agency — in five areas: Hampton Roads as a whole, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Suffolk.
Each run asked live AI assistants three buying questions, the kind a customer actually types (wording lightly simplified here):
- "Recommend a media or marketing agency in [city]. Give a short list of specific business names."
- "Who are the best media or marketing agencies in [city]? Name a few."
- "I need a media or marketing agency in [city] I can trust for an important job. Which specific businesses would you suggest?"
The questions never named a business. That matters: if you ask an AI about a company by name, it will always talk about that company. The only test that counts is whether the AI names you on its own.
Engine coverage grew during the test. The first three runs were answered by Claude; Chesapeake by Claude and Gemini; Suffolk by Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT together.
What we found
1. Every answer was a short list. Each run named at least eight local agencies (our tool shows the first eight). A customer reading that answer sees a handful of names, not a page of search results. If you are not in the handful, you are not in the decision.
2. The list changed from city to city. Comparing the names shown across the five areas, very few repeated — only a handful of agencies appeared in more than one list. Norfolk's list had no overlap with Virginia Beach's or Suffolk's. For a customer, "near me" is a different question in each city — and the AI answers it differently.
3. Our own company was named in none of them. Obizworks scored 0 out of 100 in every run. We publish that on purpose: it is our starting point, and we will measure ourselves against it with the same method we use for clients.
Why the answers differ by city
AI assistants build their answers from what they can find and trust about a place. A business shows up when three things line up for that specific city:
- The AI can identify you there. Your business name, address and phone are the same everywhere — your website, Google and Bing listings, local directories — and your site says plainly which cities you serve.
- The AI can quote you. Your own pages answer the questions customers in that city ask, in plain language, with details that software can read.
- Others vouch for you there. Local sources mention you: reviews, chambers of commerce, associations, local news, "best of" lists for that city.
A business with a strong presence in Norfolk sources but nothing tied to Suffolk can be named in one and missing from the other. Coverage is earned city by city.
What a Hampton Roads business can do this month
- Check where you stand in each city you serve. Run the free check once per city — your industry, your city. It takes about a minute and shows who is named instead of you.
- Make your listings identical. Same name, same address format, same phone, on your website and every listing. Small differences make it harder for an AI to be sure two records are the same business.
- Say where you work. Add a clear "areas we serve" section naming each city, and a page that answers the questions customers ask before they hire you.
- Earn one local mention per city. A chamber listing, an association directory, a local article. One trusted local source is worth more than many generic ones.
- Re-check monthly. AI answers move. Measure the same questions, in the same cities, every month.
What this test does not show
We tested one industry, in five areas, over three days. Results for dental practices, accounting firms or home services may look different, and AI answers change over time. We are not claiming a rule for every business — only that, in our own checks, the short list was local, specific, and different in each city. That alone is reason to check your own.
Frequently asked questions
Does AI give the same recommendations everywhere in Hampton Roads? Not in our checks. For the same kind of business and the same questions, the AI named a largely different short list in each city we tested.
How many businesses does the AI name? Each answer in our checks named a short list — at least eight local businesses per area. Customers see a handful of names, not a full page of results.
How can I see if AI recommends my business? Run the free AI Visibility Check at obizworks.com/ai-visibility-check, choose your industry and your city. It asks Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT live buying questions without naming you, and shows your score, who is named instead, and your top three fixes.
Is this the same as local SEO? They overlap. Clean listings help both, but AI visibility is about being named inside the answer itself, which also depends on whether the AI can confidently identify and quote you.
